St. Joseph’s College
St. Joseph’s College is an independent coeducational liberal arts college that is located on two campuses. Split between the Brooklyn and Long Island Campuses, St. Joseph’s challenges roughly five thousands students each calendar year. The Brooklyn Campus is located at 245 Clinton Ave. while the Long Island Campus is at 155 West Roe Blvd. in Patchogue.
The original St. Joseph’s College which was founded in 1916 was actually called, “St. Joseph’s College for Women” and founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood. Its first graduating class included fourteen. During the early years the school grew, moved from Washington St. to its present Brooklyn location on Clinton Ave. and added its laboratory pre-school to the Child Development research.
By the 1970s St. Joseph’s College was ready for some changes. In 1970 the school became coeducational through an amendment. The beginnings of the Suffolk County campus also began during this decade. At first it was an extension program based in Brentwood College, then it was able to operate as a branch campus, and finally in 1979 the branch campus became a school with a four year degree and moved to a twenty-five acre campus. Since the move to the Patchogue campus the college has expanded more to reach the size it is today, with six buildings and a outdoor field complex on a thirty acre lakeside campus.
St. Joseph’s College offers over twenty-four undergraduate majors as well as pre-professional and certificate programs. The college also has graduate degrees in management, business, health care management, human services, nursing, accounting and education. Along with these degrees, new degrees are always being considered. Some of the newest offered at St. Joseph’s include a B.A. in Journalism and New Media and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing. The College also competes in a variety of sports. Men and women both compete in basketball, soccer, tennis, cross country and track and field. While men also play baseball and golf, women’s sports also include softball, volleyball, equestrian, lacrosse and swimming. With the John A. Danzi Athletic Center, at the Patchogue Campus, complete with an elevated track, six-lane pool, weight room, fitness center and a NCAA regulation basketball court which can seat 1,500 people, St. Joseph’s is committed to providing amazing facilities for their sports program.
